Jeffrey Lamar Williams was born on the 16th of August, 1991 in Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America. He is an American rapper best known in a professional sense as Young Thug. Furthermore he is a songwriter/composer and a celebrated hip pop sensation that has won numerous awards.
At birth on the 16th of August, 1991, Young Thug was named Jeffrey Lamar Williams. He was born in Atlanta and is the tenth child of eleven children. Where he lived in Sylvan Hills, Atlanta and grew up in Jonesboro South projects. As a result He had a rough childhood in the neighborhood. He and his siblings had run-ins with the law which led to the loss of one brother; another who is serving in jail for murder and Young Thug’s violence with his teacher which took him to juvenile detention center for four years.
Young Thug became engaged to Jerrika Karlae in April 2015. He has six children by four women. Over the years he has been a target of diverse criticisms and speculations concerning his sexuality due to his fashion preferences. In 2014, at BET Hip Hop Awards, he opined that artists should not get involved in political issues or voice their opinions on social matters.
At the onset of his career, he began by releasing a series of independent mixtape; I Came from Nothing, was released in 2011. In early parts of 2013, he signed a big record deal with rapper Gucci Mane’s Brick Squad Records and later that same 2013, he released his own label debut mixtape, 1017 Thug. This met positive reviews from music critics which noted the rapper and the song for unconventional vocal style and originality. 1017 Thug got lots of attention: it was included so many year-end lists for the year 2013, such as Pitchfork Albums of the Year. This ranked it as one of the best albums of the first half of 2010. It was in Complex’s and Honorable Mention 50 Best Albums of 2013.
Fact called 1017 Thug The Best mixtape of 2013; The Guardian placed the mixtape among their Five Best Mixtapes of the year 2013 while Rolling Stone put the mixtape at number five of their 10 Best Mixtapes. Many of his other songs also fetched him many accolades in 2013; this includes Picacho, which was named as Rolling Stone’s top 100 Best Songs of the year 2013. It was also named Pitchfork’s Top 100 Tracks of 2013 as well as Spin’s 50 Best Songs of 2013.
Also in 2013, Young Thug appeared on a few tracks on 19 & Boomin by Metro Boomin, including the first song he made with Alex Tumay, Some More.
Rise to Fame and Fortune
His career saw more awareness when he collaborated with fellow Southern rappers such as Waka Flocka Flame, Birdman, Rich Homie Quan, T.I. and Gucci Mane. He also received mainstream recognition in 2014 with the songs Stoner and Danny Glover. Furthermore he appeared on some successful singles like; About the Money and Lifestyle. In the same year, he signed to Lyor Cohen’s 300 Entertainment and collaborated on mixtapes Black Portland and Rich Gang: The Tour Pt. 1. In 2014, Young Thug recorded several songs with Kanye West. Late June 2015, hence he revealed that both of them had discussed the possibility of a joint album. most noteworthy 2016, Young appeared on West’s The Life of Pablo album.
In March 2014, he was featured on the cover of The Fader; his debut single called Stoner was created to meet up with the rhythmic contemporary radio in the United States by Asylum and Atlantic Records. He started his debut album that was to get the title, Carter 6, referencing the highly acclaimed The Carter album series by American hip hop superstar, Lil Wayne, who has been the highest influence in his music career.
On the 18th of January, 2014, Young Thug revealed that he was offered $1.5 million to sign to Future’s Freebandz record label. At one point, he declared himself the richest man in Atlanta.
As in everyone’s life, success comes with its own peculiar challenges. In October 2013, Young Thug also released his commercial debut single, Stoner, which spawned a number of unofficial remixes by several rappers. Culprits include; Wale, Jim Jones, Jadakiss, Lamsu and Trick-Trick. He also encountered remix issues with Waka Flocka Flame, Nicki Minaj, and others, in his song, Danny Glover.
In 2015, a series of security issues leaked hundreds of unreleased tracks from Young Thug’s archives to the internet. To discourage the further spread of leaked tracks, Thug released a compilation mixtapes; Slime Season and Slime Season 2.
He also encountered lawsuit threats from hip pop sensation, Lil Wayne, since he planned to release an album, Carter 6, in homage to Lil Wayne’s upcoming album. Tha Carter V. Young Thug announced that he was changing the name to Barter 6 and clarified that it would no longer be his debut album but rather a mixtape.
Finally in April 2015, he announced that his official debut album would be titled Hy!£UN35, which translates to HiTunes. In July 2015, the label, 300 Entertainment released his promotional single, Pacifier, in support of Thug’s debut album, HiTunes.
On the 9th of July 2016, Young Thug announced that his self-titled mixtape, Jeffrey, was coming out soon. On the 16th of August 2016, he also told the public that he would change his name to Jeffrey for a week. The week of the release of his mixtape, Jeffrey. In November 2016, he announced he was starting his own record label imprint called YSL records.
In addition Young Thug recently joined Drake on his Boy Meets World Tour through Europe. It is a two-month run that recently kicked off in Amsterdam, where Drake debuted a new song. Thug joined the tour on the 30th of January, 2017 at London’s 02 Arena.
